I spend a lot of time in the Huntington Beach area for work, and one of the silver linings of the commute is the coffee scene nearby. Orange County has quietly become one of the best specialty coffee regions in Southern California, and the shops around Huntington Beach are proof.
These aren't the big-name chain spots you'll find on every corner. These are the places where someone is pulling shots with intention, sourcing beans with care, and building something worth going out of your way for. I've narrowed it down to three shops that I keep coming back to, each for a different reason.
Whether you're local, visiting, or just passing through on the 405, here are the best coffee shops near Huntington Beach.
9430 Warner Ave, Ste N, Fountain Valley, CA 92708
Rề Cà Phê is unlike anything else in the area. It's a modern Vietnamese coffee concept that blends traditional Vietnamese coffee culture with specialty techniques, and it does it without feeling gimmicky. The space is clean and minimal, but the menu is anything but basic. This is the kind of place where you walk in expecting a latte and walk out rethinking everything you know about espresso.
Their experimental espresso drinks are next-level. Think black sesame lattes, coconut-based creations, and preparations that borrow from Vietnamese street coffee tradition but push them into specialty territory. Every drink I've had here has surprised me in the best way. If you've only ever associated Vietnamese coffee with condensed milk (that's delicious too), Rề Cà Phê will expand your perspective significantly.
A visit to Rề Cà Phê always sends me home wanting to experiment. If you're inspired to try pulling espresso at home, the Gaggia Classic Pro is a great starting point for the price. It's what I use daily, and it handles everything from classic shots to more experimental drinks.

Freelance is tucked into an industrial area in Newport Beach, and that's part of the charm. It's a roastery and tasting room in one, so you're drinking coffee feet away from where it was roasted. The space is minimal and focused. No frills, no trendy decor for the sake of it. Just really, really good coffee served by people who clearly love what they do.
This is where I had my first Geisha, and it completely changed how I think about single-origin coffee. Freelance was one of the first roasteries in Orange County to go all-in on single-origin sourcing, and the quality shows. Their cortados and flat whites are dialed in perfectly, but if they have a Geisha or other rare lot on the menu, do yourself a favor and order it. It's the kind of coffee that makes you stop mid-sip and actually pay attention. That first Geisha here is genuinely one of my most memorable coffee moments.
After tasting what Freelance does with single-origin beans, you'll want to keep your own beans at peak freshness. The Fellow Atmos Vacuum Canister is what I use at home. It pulls the air out to slow oxidation and keeps your beans tasting like they just came off the roaster for much longer.
17086 Magnolia St, Fountain Valley, CA 92708
They also have a second location at 320 Bristol St, Costa Mesa, CA 92626.
If you know, you know. The name "Long Black" is a dead giveaway that this shop draws from Australian coffee culture, and as someone who spent time in Australia, that hits different for me. The space is warm and inviting, the baristas know what they're doing, and the whole experience just feels... right. It opened in 2021 and has quickly become a staple in the Fountain Valley coffee scene.
Long Black does the fundamentals exceptionally well. Their long blacks (naturally) are perfectly extracted, their flat whites are silky, and everything is made with care. This isn't a shop trying to reinvent the wheel. It's a shop that respects the craft and executes it at a high level. If you want a no-nonsense, beautifully made cup of coffee from baristas who take pride in their work, Long Black is your spot. It takes me back to the cafes I loved in Australia, and that's about the highest compliment I can give a coffee shop.
Long Black's Aussie-inspired approach reminds me how good simple drip coffee can be when it's done right. If you want to level up your home drip game, the Moccamaster KBGT is what I use every morning. It brews at the right temperature, finishes in under six minutes, and produces a clean, balanced cup every time.
The Huntington Beach area doesn't get as much coffee hype as LA or San Francisco, and honestly, that's part of what makes it great. These shops aren't trying to be the next viral spot on social media. They're just making excellent coffee with intention and care.
Rề Cà Phê will challenge everything you think you know about Vietnamese coffee and espresso. Freelance Coffee Project will remind you why single-origin matters. And Long Black Coffee will make you feel like you've been transported to Melbourne for 20 minutes.
If you're in the area, hit all three. You won't regret it.
Regardless of which beans you bring back from your travels, you need the right station to support them. I have written deep-dive guides on how I organize my own counters for both workflows:
