Making Coffee Without a Coffee Maker

Let’s be honest, most people start their coffee journey with a pod machine or a basic drip brewer. I’ve been there too. And for a while, it works. It’s easy, convenient, and feels like an upgrade from instant.

But if you’re reading this, you’re probably starting to care a little more about your coffee.

Maybe you want something that actually brings out the flavor in your beans, without having to buy a giant countertop machine.

Good news: you don’t need a traditional coffee maker to brew great coffee. You really can make good coffee without a coffee maker.

What I Use Every Day (At Home and While Traveling)

These days, my go-to method is the V60 pour-over. It’s a simple, portable brew method that makes better coffee than any machine I’ve owned, and I’ve used it everywhere:

  • At home

  • In hotel rooms

  • On camping trips

  • Even in Airbnb kitchens with nothing but a pot and a mug

If you’re just stepping beyond the Keurig or Mr. Coffee world, the V60 is the best place to start.

What You Actually Need (It’s Not Much)

This setup is lightweight, affordable, and travel-friendly:

And that’s it. You don’t need a machine, power cord, or app-controlled brewer.

Just good beans and a little attention.

But What About Grinding?

I avoided grinding my own beans for a long time. It felt like too much work.

But once I did it, I realized: this is where the real upgrade happens.

If you’re still buying pre-ground coffee, this is the one change that will make everything taste better, no matter how you brew.

Here are two grinders I personally use and recommend:

TIMEMORE Manual Grinder

This is what I used for years. It’s compact, solid, and delivers a consistent grind that works perfectly with pour-over.

OutIn Fino Portable Electric Grinder

This is my newest gear pickup, and honestly, it’s amazing. I am actually writing this post from the plane after a work trip where I got to use it daily.

It grinds fast, charges via USB-C, and still fits in a small bag. It’s the best electric grinder I’ve found for travel or quick mornings.

My Real-Life Brew Routine

Here’s exactly how I make coffee without a machine, at home or on the go:

  1. Boil water – around 300–400ml is perfect for one large mug

  2. Grind coffee – I use 15g of beans

  3. Set up the V60 over your mug

  4. Place on a scale - any kitchen scale will do.
  5. Rinse the filter, then add your ground coffee

  6. Pour slowly in circles, starting with a small bloom (just enough to wet the grounds), go to about 50g of water, wait 45 seconds, then slowly keep pouring until you reach about 250g. Pause roughly every 30 seconds to make sure you dont overflow. Once you get the hang of it there is a more dialed in method.

  7. Let it drip, and you’re done, better coffee than most cafés, especially Starbucks.

Takes 3–4 minutes total, and the cleanup is basically just tossing the paper filter.

Final Thoughts

If you’re trying to make better coffee without buying another big machine, this is the move.

You don’t need a Keurig. You don’t need a $300 countertop brewer. And you definitely don’t need to settle for average coffee.

I use this setup every day, whether I’m home, traveling, or just trying to keep things simple.
