At home the Gaggia makes my coffee. On the road it's a pour over. I travel to Denver regularly for work, and I bring this kit on every camping trip, so it has to be small, tough and quick to pack.
I got into pour over because my coffee friends all made them, and I started making my own when I traveled or when a special bag showed up. Everything here fits in one small case, and I drink it black.

Brewer, grinder and scale together. Prices are rough and change often.

The Brewer
Hario V60 Glass
The V60 is my brewer at home and on the road. I use the glass one, both in hotel rooms and at the campsite. A V60 is light, it has no moving parts to break, and paper filters make cleanup as simple as tossing the filter.
Glass is the one I trust, but if you're worried about breaking it in a bag, the plastic V60 brews the same way for a fraction of the price.
Pick by budget
The same brew for a fraction of the price, and it won't break in your bag.

The Grinder
Outin Fino
Pre-ground coffee goes stale fast, and it goes stale even faster in a hotel room. The Outin Fino is the one piece that makes the biggest difference on the road: a small electric burr grinder that charges over USB-C and grinds a single dose with one press.
I use it for pour overs at home too. It's quick, it's consistent, and there's no hand cranking at 6 AM in a hotel room.
Pick by budget
A well-made hand grinder. A little cranking, but no battery to charge.
Check priceA premium hand grinder with very precise adjustment, for pour over and espresso.
Check priceThe Scale
Maestri House mini
A scale was one of two things I thought I didn't need until I bought one. Weighing the coffee and the water is what makes a pour over taste the same in a hotel room as it does at home.
The Maestri House scale is the compact one I travel with. It's accurate to 0.1g, has a timer, charges over USB-C, and takes up almost no room in the case.
Pick by budget
Thin, light and accurate enough for pour over.

YETI Daytrip Lunch Box
My V60, filters and the Outin Fino live in a YETI Daytrip lunch box. It's padded, it zips shut, and it comes on every trip.
Any padded pouch works. The point is one case, always packed, so making good coffee on the road takes no planning.
Pick by budget
Wrap the brewer in a dish towel and you're set.
Padded, tough, and holds the whole kit. What I use.

The Cup
MIIR Travel Tumbler
The MIIR is my daily cup at home, and it comes on every trip. It keeps coffee hot for hours, wherever I end up drinking it.
Pick by budget
Rinse it with hot water first so your coffee stays warm longer.

On the Road
In a hotel room. I make my own coffee in the room with this kit. Most rooms have a kettle, or a coffee maker you can run with just water for hot water. Sometimes the only option is the room's basic drip machine, and I've used plenty of those over the years. Grind right before you brew, and weigh both the coffee and the water.
At a campsite. The same kit comes on every camping trip. You'll need a way to boil water and something to pour with.
Beans on the road. Pack a fresh bag from home, or buy from a local roaster where you're going. When I'm in Denver I stop at Corvus every trip and bring beans home.
Where to start
If you're building a travel kit from scratch, this is the order I'd buy in. A portable grinder makes the biggest difference on the road.
- A grinderFresh grounds matter most
- A brewerA V60 is light
- A scaleSame cup anywhere
- A caseAlways packed
